A Different Perspective

Odds are, this isn’t the first travel blog you’ve read. Obviously, I love traveling. The thrill of breathing new air in a place I’ve never been, partaking in a beautifully rich foreign culture and having fun doing it is unbeatable! Though, I’m not some guy who quit his regular 9-5 to commit to a life of travel (I’m certainly open to the idea!), I am a professional touring independent musician. I’ve traveled across the United States twice, visiting 26 states (hoping to visit all 50 at least once). I’ve also traveled internationally to 4 beautiful countries and looking forward to more!

Why Travel Like A Touring Musician?

Contrary to popular belief, most musicians don’t travel in the lap of luxury. In fact, most travel arrangements are pretty brutal. We fly cheaper red-eye flights that leave us exhausted. Then, there are long rides in cramped vans eating gas station meals. We often stay in questionable motels and hotels. When you arrive, there’s almost no time at all to enjoy the place you’re visiting. You’re living out of a suitcase. The whole time you know that every dollar spent is coming out of your pay for the gig. It’s no wonder that most musicians are lucky to break even after touring.

Still, despite these situations, touring has a way of naturally teaching musicians to be good at trip optimization. We appreciate good trip investments, spot shady situations, pack only what we need, glide through airports, and save BIG. If there’s a problem to be had when traveling, rest assured, a musician has experienced it.
